Midwood Montessori School

Monday, February 28th, 2011

It appears that, in addition to having 3 of the best public high schools in Brooklyn in our area, we also have a highly rated Montessori school. They have the following resources, according to NY Metro Parents:

Preschool and kindergarten for ages 2 years 9 months to 5 years 8 months, with am, pm, and full-day sessions and early drop-off. Summer camp with air-conditioning. Beautiful lunch facilities and bus service. A dedicated and nurturing staff teach on a 1-to-1 basis, using the Montessori hands-on method. Full time art and music teachers, three outdoor play areas, indoor gym, manipulatives, cultural studies, math, sensorial, language arts, science, geography, grace and courtesy.

Wikipedia has a fairly comprehensive description of the Montessori method here. They are members of the American Montessori Association.

Dollar vans

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Dollar vans were discussed at a Brooklyn community meeting:

Besides New Utrecht, there are several other public schools near 65th Street. The dollar vans, subject of many public complaints throughout Brooklyn such as around Brooklyn College and Kings Plaza, use the wide thoroughfare as a regular pickup and drop-off route. No city buses travel the road.

What are your thoughts on them? Do they provide a valuable service to areas underserved by public transportation, or are they a road menace?
