Pharmacy robber in South Brooklyn
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011
From the NY Times:
Since March 3, the robber has struck mom-and-pop pharmacies in Marine Park and Sheepshead Bay five times, demanding powerful painkillers like OxyContin…
His methods are strikingly consistent — in fact, the police say he has robbed two different shops twice, despite visible cameras…
“I can’t work, I’m terrified,” said Andrew Epstein, 53, a pharmacist who was behind the counter at J Drugs on Avenue N when it was held up for a second time, on April 1. The gunman burst into the shop, pointed a silver gun at a clerk and demanded painkillers, Mr. Epstein said.
The gunman began to count down from 10 as Mr. Epstein hurriedly filled a bag with OxyContin and other drugs.
“When he started to count down, I said, ‘I don’t want him getting to zero,’ ” Mr. Epstein said.
The man grabbed the drugs and dashed, pausing only to shove an older man who had been making photocopies near the front door. In the telling, it might seem as if the episode lasted a long time, but a review of surveillance video shows that the robber was inside the store for a total of 37 seconds.
Since then, the pharmacy hired an armed guard for the entrance and the police have increased patrols in the neighborhood.
Uniformed officers are stationed outside the pharmacies in the area, and undercover officers are patrolling the neighborhood, the police told the pharmacies.”
